Choosing a campsite pitch with children: questions to ask first
On this page

A guide, not advice. Check your kit maker's figures before you buy or pack.
A convenient pitch changes the daily work of camping. The distance to the toilets, vehicle movements and the space around the tent can matter more than a photograph of the view.
Ask how the site is arranged
Before booking, ask where family pitches sit in relation to toilets, roads, play areas and water. A pitch beside the facilities may save walking but bring more passing traffic. A secluded corner may mean a longer night-time trip.
Explain your tent's complete pitched footprint and the ages or access needs that affect your choice. Ask about ground conditions and whether pitches are allocated or chosen on arrival.

Walk the pitch before unpacking
Look for hazards and check where guy lines will run. Find the route to the toilets and choose a meeting point. Ask staff where the fire point is and how to report a problem.
Plan a clear entrance route that does not pass the cooking area. The Camping and Caravanning Club: Camping safety safety guidance says cooking should stay outside tents and awnings; reserve outdoor space for cooking before you fill the pitch with tables and games.
Make the boundaries clear
Explain which areas children may use and where an adult must accompany them. Point out moving vehicles and other campers' pitches. Use an ordinary landmark that is easy to recognise after dark rather than relying entirely on a pitch number.
Decide who is supervising while the other adult pitches the tent or cooks. If one adult is camping alone, choose a simpler setup that lets you do these jobs without losing track of the children.

Be willing to ask for another pitch
If the allocated spot does not fit the tent safely or creates an access problem, speak to staff before pitching. Resolving it early is easier than moving a fully furnished tent. A good first question is practical: can our family use this space comfortably throughout the day and night?

FAQs
Should I walk the pitch before unpacking?
Yes. Find the toilets, the fire point and the route between them and the tent, and pick a meeting point the children can recognise.
What if the allocated pitch does not suit us?
Speak to staff before you pitch. It is easier to ask early than to move a tent that is already set up.
