Flysheet-first pitching
Flysheet-first pitching is putting up the outer flysheet before the inner tent, so the inside stays drier while you build the tent. It is the reverse of inner-first pitching, where the inner is set up first.
Where you'll see it
You will see it in the pitching instructions for many tents, often described as a wet-weather method. Some tents are designed for inner-first pitching and say so. Check the maker's instructions for the order, because pitching in the wrong order can let rain reach the inside of the tent before the flysheet is in place.
What to check
- The order given in the maker's pitching instructions, which may differ between models from the same brand.
- Whether the flysheet is threaded over the frame or clipped on, and what the maker says about each.
- Whether the maker suggests the method for wet weather, or only for certain models.
- Whether the pitch is clear of debris and the pegs are ready, so the flysheet does not drag on the ground.
