Screw-thread cartridge

A screw-thread cartridge is a gas cartridge that screws onto the stove, so you can take it off part-used and keep the rest for later. They're common on backpacking stoves.

Where you'll see it

You'll see screw-thread cartridges on backpacking stove product pages, in camping gas guides and on the cartridges themselves. The stove's instructions say whether it takes this type, and the cartridge pack names it. Check the stove first, because other fittings won't connect to it.

What to check

  • That the stove is made for screw-thread cartridges, using the stove's instructions and box.
  • That the cartridge and stove share the same thread, since the other fittings won't connect.
  • How the maker says to fit and remove the cartridge, outdoors and away from any flame.
  • Cook outside in the open air, away from the tent. Never use a stove, BBQ or gas heater inside or at the doorway of a tent, porch or awning.
  • Take empty cartridges home or to a recycling point that accepts them.
  • Gas cartridge: the wider group of small camping gas canisters.
  • Butane: the gas most small cartridges contain.
  • Backpack camping: the kind of trip where these stoves are most often used.
