Season rating

A season rating is a label on some sleeping bags that names a time of year, rather than giving temperature figures from a stated test. Makers use season ratings differently, so the same wording can mean different things from one brand to the next.

Where you'll see it

It appears on some sleeping bags, including some cheaper ones, and it may come without a note of how it was measured. Treat it with caution. Compare bags by the comfort rating on the label, and check whether the maker also gives its comfort, limit and extreme figures.

What to check

  • Whether the bag also shows a comfort rating, with the standard named.
  • What the maker means by its season label, on its product page or in its guidance.
  • Whether the label gives a season word alone, with no temperature figures to compare.
  • The comfort rating against the forecast low for your site, rather than the season label.
