Storm straps

Storm straps are fabric or webbing straps that tie the flysheet down to the frame or the ground, so it holds its shape in strong wind. They are usually found at the corners or along the base of the flysheet.

Where you'll see it

You will see storm straps in tent photos, product descriptions and pitching instructions. They matter most in windy weather, or on an exposed pitch where wind can pull a flysheet loose and let rain in. Check whether the maker includes them with the tent or lists them as an optional extra.

What to check

  • The number and position of straps on the flysheet, using the product photos and description.
  • Whether the straps attach to the frame, the pegs or the groundsheet, as the instructions say.
  • Whether the straps come with the tent or are sold separately.
  • The pitching instructions, so the straps are tensioned evenly rather than pulled hard in one direction.
  • Guy line: a line that adds tension and stability to a tent in wind.
  • Tent peg: the stake that anchors the tent and the straps.
  • Flysheet: the outer layer that the straps hold in place.
