A family campsite beside a lake in the hills

A guide, not advice. Check your kit maker's figures before you buy or pack.

The easiest late arrival is one the campsite has agreed to and the family has rehearsed. Before booking, find out whether arrival after dark is allowed and how access works.

Confirm the practical details

Save the entrance location, latest arrival time and staff contact. Ask how to identify your pitch and what to do if delayed. Do not assume the gate code or reception arrangements will arrive while you still have mobile reception.

Choose a setup you already know how to pitch. If the equipment is unfamiliar, practise at home before committing to a late first use.

Pack the first ten minutes separately

Keep lights, waterproofs, pegs and the shelter accessible. Have suitable clothing ready for children rather than buried under bedding. Put dry sleeping equipment where it can remain protected until the shelter is ready.

Plan who supervises children or pets while the other person deals with equipment. For one adult, simplify the tasks and consider an earlier arrival or different accommodation.

Leave cooking out of the arrival rush

Eat before reaching the campsite or have food that needs no cooking. If cooking later, use an appropriate outdoor arrangement and follow the Camping and Caravanning Club: campsite safety guidance. Do not move a cooker into the tent because it is dark or raining.

Find the toilets and fire point before everyone goes to bed. Keep the route to the tent entrance clear of guy lines and equipment.

Choose what can wait

Pitch safely and establish sleeping arrangements first. Decorative lights, elaborate storage and a full kitchen layout can wait until daylight.

If weather, fatigue or an access problem makes setup unreasonable, use the alternative you agreed in advance. A late-arrival plan should preserve a comfortable choice, rather than create pressure to complete the original booking at any cost.

FAQs

Can I arrive after the office closes?

Ask the campsite before booking. Rules and access arrangements differ, so get the latest arrival time and instructions in writing.

What should I pack where I can reach it first?

Lights, waterproofs, pegs and the shelter, plus clothes for the children. Keep sleeping gear dry until the shelter is up.
