Windbreak length

The calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example, sum and figures below show exactly how it works, so you can do it yourself. A guide, not advice.
Short answer
Enter the length of the frontage you want to screen, the share you want the windbreak to cover, and any extra length for returns at the ends. The result is a planning estimate: check the campsite's rules, the forecast and the windbreak maker's anchoring instructions.
Worked example
| You enter | Value |
|---|---|
| Length of the area you want to screen | 6 m |
| How much of the frontage to cover | 75% |
| Extra length for returns at the ends | 1 m |
Allow about 1.04 m (3 ft 5 in) of windbreak
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Windbreak length to allow | 1.04 m (3 ft 5 in) |
| Straight frontage covered | 0.04 m (0 ft 2 in) |
Show the working
- Straight coverage: 6 m × 0.8% = 0.04 m
- Total including returns: 0.04 + 1 = 1.04 m
How it works
- Straight coverage = frontage × coverage percentage
- Total windbreak length = straight coverage + extra length for end returns
Check the campsite's rules before using a windbreak. Windbreaks catch wind and need secure anchoring; do not use them as a substitute for checking the forecast.
Our figures (adjustable)
These are our planning allowances and, once checked, typical figures with their sources. They aren't facts about your kit: change any of them in the calculator.
This calculator has no built-in defaults: every figure comes from you or your kit's own label.

FAQs
Should a windbreak cover the whole pitch?
That depends on the layout and site rules. Consider access, neighbouring pitches and how much wind the screen will catch. Ask the campsite if windbreaks are restricted.
Can a windbreak make a pitch safe in strong wind?
No. A windbreak catches wind and needs secure anchoring. Check the forecast and the maker's instructions, and change plans if conditions are unsuitable.
