Cable reel

A cable reel is a drum that stores a length of hook-up cable, so you can wind it out to reach your pitch and wind it back up when packing away. Many are sold as a pair with the lead they hold.

Where you'll see it

You'll see cable reels on camping kit lists, in hook-up guides and on campsite pages that ask you to bring your own lead. Some are described as extension reels or cable drums. Check that the reel suits the supply point before you set off.

What to check

  • The maker's instructions, which say the reel should be fully unwound when in use. Follow them.
  • That the reel and its cable are made for outdoor hook-up use, as the maker states.
  • The condition of the cable as it winds, with no cracks, kinks, exposed wires or other damage.
  • The plugs and sockets on the reel, and whether they match what the site accepts.
  • Hook-up cable: the lead a reel stores.
  • Hook-up: the campsite supply the reel connects to.
  • RCD: the protective device, and what to do if it trips.
