Grass pitch

A grass pitch is a campsite pitch on natural turf. Tent pegs usually go in easily and the ground feels softer underfoot, but it can turn muddy or uneven after wet weather.

Where you'll see it

Campsite listings name the ground type as grass, sometimes beside hardstanding or gravel options. Some grass pitches sit in open fields and others in marked bays, so the label alone does not show the layout. Read the site's pitch description, and check any photos or maps it gives for the pitch you are booking.

What to check

  • Whether the pitch is marked as level, and whether the site drains well after heavy rain.
  • How the site handles wet weather, such as paths, boards or rules about driving onto grass.
  • Whether the site allows pegs in the grass, since some sites limit this.
  • The forecast for your dates, because rain can change a grass pitch quickly.
  • Whether the pitch has any hook-up or water point, which the ground type does not show.
  • Hardstanding: the firmer alternative, usually easier to walk and park on after rain.
  • Serviced pitch: a pitch that includes utilities.
  • Pitch: the space you are allocated, whatever the ground.
