Windbreak
A windbreak is a screen, panel or fence that blocks or slows the wind around a pitch. It may be a purpose-made fabric screen or a set of panels, and it is used to shelter a seating area or the space outside the tent.
Where you'll see it
You will see windbreaks on campsite pages, in kit lists and in packing notes for family or glamping trips. Some campsites allow your own windbreak, while others set rules on what may be put up and where it can stand. Check the campsite's own rules and booking page before you set one up.
What to check
- Whether the campsite's booking page or rules allow your own windbreak, and any limits on size or placement.
- The size the maker gives for the windbreak, compared with the space on your pitch.
- How it is fixed, with pegs or weights, so it does not blow over onto a tent or another pitch.
- Whether it is kept well clear of the tent door and any cooking area.
Related terms
- Pitch: the space where the windbreak has to fit.
- Tent peg: the pegs that hold a windbreak in place.
- Guy line: lines that help steady a tent or screen in wind.
