Yurt

A yurt is a round, domed shelter with a wooden lattice frame and a cover. It is a traditional dwelling of nomadic peoples in Central Asia, and in UK glamping it is often a furnished unit, with the cover commonly made of canvas.

Where you'll see it

Glamping listings use yurt for round units, often on farms or in woodland. It describes a style rather than a standard, so the same word can cover very different interiors. Check the listing's photos, floor plan and included items for the yurt you are booking.

What to check

  • Whether beds, bedding and towels are included, and the sleeping layout the provider describes.
  • Whether there is a bathroom in the yurt, or whether you use shared facilities nearby.
  • The heating the provider fits, and its safety guidance for using it. Never bring a stove, BBQ or gas heater inside a yurt or at its doorway.
  • Whether a cooker is provided, and where the provider expects you to cook. Cooking happens outside in the open air, away from the yurt.
  • The arrival and parking details, and how far the walk is in the dark.
  • Glamping: the wider term for furnished stays.
  • Bell tent: another round tent style, usually with a central pole.
  • Glamping pod: a more solid, self-contained unit.
