Shepherd's hut
A shepherd's hut is a small, solid hut based on the shelters shepherds once used in fields, and it is now a common glamping unit. Some are still mounted on wheels, which is how the originals were moved around a farm.
Where you'll see it
Glamping listings use shepherd's hut for furnished huts, often on farms or in rural settings. It describes a style rather than a standard, so interiors and facilities vary. Read the listing for the hut you are booking, and check its photos and floor plan.
What to check
- Whether the hut has a bathroom, or whether you share facilities nearby, and how far the walk is in the dark.
- The heating fitted and the provider's safety notes for using it. Never bring a stove, BBQ or gas heater inside the hut or at its door.
- Whether beds, bedding and towels are included, and whether any of them are an extra.
- Whether a cooker is provided, and where the provider expects you to cook. Cooking happens outside, in the open air, away from the hut.
- The parking and arrival instructions, and what the provider does in poor weather.
